Themes and suitability
Is this larp for me? What is it about?
- The game has a lot of dark and heavy themes, e.g. the character's own death, the death of a close character, giving up ideals and values, break up, loneliness, betrayal and being an outsider. There is some variation in the likelihood and intensity of these themes based on character, but since ultimately each player makes choices during the larp that are beyond the control of the organizer, any of the characters may have to deal with these themes.
- The game aims for an intimate and intense atmosphere. The tempo of the larp depends on the duration of each run, in longer versions of the larp the tempo is a bit slower, leaving more time for quieter moments but for the shorter versions tempo can be quite exhausting. In both cases however players should be prepared for both ends of this spectrum: a turbocharged firework of revelations and drama as well as dwelling and marinating in their own feelings without anything happening. The plots and themes unfold throughout the larp via conversations, debates, confrontations and disputes between the characters. The purpose of the larp is to offer players the opportunity to experience the rollercoaster of emotions their characters go through. During the larp, the characters end up facing their own mistakes, deal with themes of mortality and immortality, experience some realizations, and above all, have conversations that they should have had (hundreds of) years ago.
- At the setting of the larp there is a mystery about the situation the characters are in. How does their world work? What exactly is the source of the characters' powers? Can the past be changed? Is anything even real to them? What is real anyway? But these and other characters' questions about the world and reality do not have a correct answer within the larp. It is not possible for the characters to realize something during the larp with which they can 'win'. If there is time left for other drama, the characters can think about these philosophical questions, but at least at this stage there are no right or wrong answers, but rather the views of the individual characters/players on the reality around them. So this is not a larp for players seeking to win or find an optimal solution. There are none. This is a larp where characters are forced to accept the circumstances and come to terms with them. Or burn everything around them trying to fight it.
- For most of the characters, playing a romantic relationship is a very central element in the larp. All of the romances are complicated and painful in some ways, but all are at least partly mutual. There is only one character in the larp without any romantic contact at all and two characters that have romantic contact in their history which currently is anything but (with possibility to rekindle some of the lost feelings during the larp though). For other characters, romantic contact is an essential part of the larp. I have sometimes been asked why different romances are so strongly represented in the larps I write - in short, complex, multidimentional and story-relevant love stories are interesting content to create, and I enjoy exploring these themes both as a player and as a game designer. However, I will always also write characters without any romantic elements, so enjoying this kind of content is not a prerequisite for participating in the larp. However, the larp is particularly suitable for players who like playing multidimensional romantic relationships.
- The central theme of the larp is the introspection of each character. If you enjoy playing inside your head and crying (alone) in a hotel room, this is probably the larp for you. During the larp, each character reflects on how their choices, feelings and thoughts have been shaped by the people around them. How every friend, family member and loved one has left their mark on them, for better or for worse. How every moment lived has led them to the point where they are now. How the mistakes of the past and the choices made cannot be erased, but have to be faced again and again. How does an immortal person deal with loss, death and their own possible mortality.
- There are very few action elements in the game, so the larp is not suitable for players who need active things to do in the larp. Most of the characters' problems are not meant to be solved, the game content consists of facing heavy issues and weighing different choices. You shouldn't try to solve any single problem or dispute right away.
- The larp has tons of material and each character has +/- 10 relevant contacts (some of which may be dead). The game relies heavily on the players being able to invest in reading the character material (~ 35 pages of characters + the same amount of general materials) and deepening the character's relationships with both player characters and lost loved ones. There are some preliminary tasks associated with the characters, the completion of which is strongly recommended, and I encourage players to deepen their contacts both through conversations before the event and in various workshops at the location. This is a larp in which the experience is heavily dependent on how strong emotional bond the player creates between their character and those close to them.
- The larp is very small and the experience is built on trust between players since there are close connections between almost all characters. So it is especially important that players get along with their fellow players. Due this as part of the sign up process I’ll ask co-player preferences. After the sign up for each run has ended, I will send all who signed up a list of the players registered in that run and ask if there is someone on the list with whom they do not want to be in the same run. There are so many links between all the characters in the larp that you cannot avoid playing close contact, so if there is a player with whom you do not want to play close contact, you cannot participate in the same run. From the same list, you can also separately name people with whom you do not want to play romantic contact as well as those with whom you feel comfortable playing romantic contact with. The fact that you do not want to play romantic contact with a player does not prevent you from participating in the same run.
